Over 30 cherry Blossoms plants and other different species of Trees from Japan were planted by officials of Atok Benquet, Kochi Prefecture and Japanese Embassy last Monday in celebration of the 40th anniversary sisterhood ties between Japan’s Kochi prefecture and Benguet province.
Sakura or Cherry blossoms are one the major tourist attraction in Japan. Spring time is nothing less than magical when Sakura blossoms around late March to May every year. The beautiful pink flowers captures every visitor’s attention.
Last year there were more than 100 Cherry blossoms planted here in the Philippines but only few survived. According to botanist Kiyuharu Yamamoto, “they were planted at the wrong season”. Today, they planted it at the start of our rainy season.
Cherry blossoms are expected to bloom in 3 years time and will be opened to campers. Atok is around two and a half hour away from Baguio city. However, they are also planning to plant the Sakura trees in several Natura Parks in Benguet like Mt. Timbac and Mt. Pulag.
